AIM and Cookson Sign Lead-Free License Agreement

Montreal, Canada– AIM, Inc. and the Cookson Group plc announced today that they have signed a worldwide license agreement for AIM's patented lead-free alloy, trade-named CASTIN. The agreement enables the entire Cookson group of companies to manufacture and sell the CASTIN alloy throughout the world.

"We are pleased to have the Cookson Group join our growing roster of licensing partners. Cookson, through its subsidiaries, Alpha Metals, Fry Technologies and Witmetaal B.V., is the key player in the supply of solder products to the electronic assembly industry", said Rick Black, president of AIM. "Through this license agreement, we can further accelerate the development and implementation of the CASTIN family of lead-free solders to meet the growing market demand for practical, lead-free solutions.

Christopher Bastecki, Director of Marketing for Alpha Metals, had the following comments on the agreement: "Our license agreement with AIM allows us to offer our customers the full range of lead-free alternatives in a full array of products (including powder, solder paste, bar solder, wire solder, etc). The CASTIN alloy is a logical choice for electronic assemblers who perform both wave soldering and print & reflow process technologies. The industry’s desire to use one alloy for both processes is very strong, particularly when considering any potential rework situations and alloy compatibility. Due to the fact that the CASTIN alloy has about 1% lower silver content, compared to most common lead-free alternatives, it clearly has a significant cost advantage for materials such as bar solder and wire solder."

CASTIN is an environmentally-friendly, lead-free solder comprised of tin, silver, copper and antimony. It features a relatively low melting temperature, offers superior joint strength, and inhibits intermetallic growth during high thermal temperature cycling. CASTIN contains commonly found, non-toxic elemental constituents. CASTIN is uniquely positioned as a cost efficient alternative to conventional tin-lead solders, as well as to common lead-free alternatives Sn/Ag and Sn/Ag/Cu.

Headquartered in Montreal, Canada, AIM is a leading global manufacturer of solders and fluxes for the electronics industry. The company develops and markets a complete line of solder paste, liquid flux, cored wire and bar solder solutions for circuit board fabrication and assembly.
